What Is A Sway Control Bar and What Does It Do?

Does a sway control bar keep your travel trailer from swaying? Yes and no. This important neccessity is designed to stabilize the camper.

It is a bar with a tensioner that is tightened by hand and acts as a resistance between the towing vehicle and the rv camper. It needs to be adjusted according to the road conditions you are traveling on. You can overtighten it. You can also undertighten it.

The purpose is to move back and forth to allow for the motion of the travel trailer, and also for other forces such as wind, improper hitch hook up, crosswinds, a truck passing or weather conditions.

There are 2 types of sway control bars. One is friction and the other is cam. Both work well if used correctly. It is under pressure when tension is applied to the bar when the brakes are applied.

It works on compression from the tow vehicle's braking pressure. It is an important factor in the towing process and is also a safety feature.

The friction bar connects between the trailer hitch on the tow vehicle and the travel trailer tongue. Never tow an rv camper without this. You must have a tension bar or break bar.

Without any type of sway control, the oscillation of movement from the travel trailer will cause a roll over. The more you try to correct the trailer sway, the worse it gets.

You can have an Equalizer Sway Control hitch which offers a 4 point sway control and a weight distributing hitch in one. This type controls any swaying before it even starts.

Always have the dealer show you how to hitch your travel trailer for the safest tow. You can get books and videos on how to manage the towing needs.
