Weather Is A Sure Thing, So Be Prepared For The Sunny and Stormy
The most unpreditable weather happens everyday. You will encounter all kinds when camping. One minute it can be nice and sunny, then in the afternoon, you may have a shower. We have seen both. One thing you will want to pack in your camper is an alert radio. These are worth paying for. Keep it plugged it at all times. You will be alerted to severe storms that may affect your day and or your night. If you are alerted to thunderstorms in your camping area, please remember you are surrounded by trees and water. These are the two things that can cause damage to you, your camper, and your tow vehicle. Winds can blow at a speed that can create havoc to anything in it's path. Keeping a tarp in your camper is a good idea, for this reason. Tarps can protect your belongings from rain and wind. If it does start raining and it is only an afternoon shower, lower your camper awning on the end fartherest from the camper door for water run-off. This will direct the drainage from off the top of the awning to the back of the camper. Be sure to gather all furniture and food you have on the picnic table and put it under the awning or in the camper. Tarps also can be used to cover your wood. Wet wood will not burn, so keep it dry. If you are experiencing severe storms, be prepared to button up all your camping supplies. Roll up the awning, put all chairs and accessories inside the camper. These will blow around with the wind. Let your television antennae down and keep your weather radio within listening distance. If you are alerted to tornados in your camping area, please leave your camper and go to the nearest restroom area. These are built to double as a storm shelter. Ask your park host about the evacuation procedures for severe situations when you check in. Always have a plan in place for severe measures. Be sure everyone knows what to do and where to go, just in case you are not all in the same area. You can check the forecast for the location you are wanting to visit. Just enter the zip code and city and you will know what to expect on the date you want to travel.
Another good item to have on hand is a set of walkie-talkies. Make sure these are charged at all times and have a talking distance of at least 1 mile. You can carry these if leaving the camp site for emergencies. Give one to your children to take while bike riding, swimming, hiking, walking or boating. You can call them when it's time to eat or just to check on them.
It's weather that looks like this that you really need to watch out for. Thunderstorms can build up in the heat of the day and send you a little shower or a more serious storm. As my husband says "Always Be Prepared" for anything. He was a Boy Scout and that is their motto. He lives by it every day.
